Urban Craft Stars

There’s a cultural revolution quietly taking place across the world – turn down your Nu Rave for a minute because you might not notice ‘Nu-Craft’.

Urban Craft Stars

In a world surrounded by bland brands, we trendy young things are increasingly ditching the mass produced, uniform IKEA ware for old school crafts with a modern twist. We’re not talking about your charming home-knitted placemats made one rainy Sunday, but fashionable, distinctive and collectible items made by professionals.

Visit London’s Carnaby Street this weekend (9th August), where the Nu-Craft movement gets its own store in Kingly Court. The shop will host a showcase of British designer-makers displaying and selling their own, hand-crafted and vintage-inspired designs in the ‘Urban Craft Stars’ pop-up shop.

Everything from furniture recycled from old tube maps to organic printed kid’s tee shirts, funky hand-knitted scarves, photography and pretty leather purses will be available to buy at competitive prices.

Carnaby Street is best known for its high-street-boutique shopping and Kingly Court just off the main thoroughfare cultivates smaller labels and vintage boutiques, hosting some of the best original design talent in London.

Just some of the good stuff you can expect to find at Urban Craft Stars:

Bombus - best known for reclaimed furniture but also produces accessories and glass. Amelia, a St Martin’s textiles graduate is inspired by vintage and decoupage and recently took on refurbishing  East London boozer The Camel. Her best known item which was recently featured in The Telegraph is a reclaimed chair covered in vintage comic strip. www.bombus.co.uk

Littlechook - printed textiles for interiors and childrenswear – flock printed bunnies and bold shapes. www.littlechook.co.uk

Urbanknit - from handbags and purses in bright African prints and batiks, to customisable scarves and T-shirts, there is something for everyone with a taste for originality. www.urbanknit.com

My mum’s a hippie - embroidered quirky illustrations on T-shirts and striking accessories

The Urban Craft Stars will be ‘popping up’ for a limited period only (till 31st August) but all the designers are also available through online craft hub etsy - where the collective first met.
