J+ at Uniqlo

Jil Sander’s five year absence from the fashion world is about to come to an end with an exciting new collection for Uniqlo.

Jil Sander returns

The Japanese high street chain will showcase a collection of collaborations with the German designer on October 1st. The line, named +J,  consists of 100 pieces of woman’s wear and 40 pieces for men. Expect to see a plethora of jersey t-shirts, crisp white shirts, wool outwear and cashmere knitwear. Jil Sander is known for her classically simplistic creations in monochrome shades, which is very much mirrored in her designs for UNIQLO.

It’s become somewhat of a trend for designers to connect to the masses by working with high street fashion stores. It’s a bold move, as there is always a danger of diluting the high-end image of a luxury fashion label, as their desirability resides around exclusivity and a hefty price tag. However, it’s always good news for the high street partner, as their brand is instantly showered with connotations of quality and splendour. Also, those of us who don’t have a wad of crisp 50s at hand are able to experience the elegance and craftsmanship of a renowned designer without having to sell a family member or re-mortgage the house.

An imperative factor when carrying out brand collaboration is the ‘fit’ between brands. For the gap between haute couture and high street clobber to be diminished, a brand fit is necessary. The crux of UNIQLO and Japanese culture is that of simplicity and uniformity. UNIQLO use plain designs and colours to create staple pieces apt for everyone. Jil Sander’s ethic matches this with her traditional, uncomplicated style.

These two brands marry well and the result is a stylish collection that anyone could implement into their wardrobe.+J will be available in selected London stores and online, so go and get yourself a classic piece of affordable luxury.
